For those looking for a slightly more challenging ride, below are a series of suggestions that take in a range of terrain, mainly on quiet roads, with a few of the local attractions to visit along the way.

This loop heads west along the Loire before taking the renowned local climb of the Côte du Panorama. From there, you head through farmland and villages before climbing to the edge of the vast Bertranges Forest at Eugnes. The road then drops down towards Guérigny before turning right on a backroad into Nevers.

This ride starts out following the Loire along the north bank. After a short kick up to the village of Marzy, it heads down to cross the river at Fourchambault for a tour around the neighbouring département of the Cher. Near the village of Torteron, make a short detour to visit the 12thC Cistercian abbey of Fontmorigny, now abandoned. After the small post-industrial town of La Guerche, the route plunges through extensive forest emerging in Apremont-sur-Allier, considered one of the prettiest villages in the region, dominated by an imposing chateau. Return to Nevers across the outstanding aqueduct that carries the canal across the Allier, sticking to the car-free towpath as far as Challuy before heading into town.

This ride starts out alongside the Loire, crossing at Fourchambault where you pick up Loire à Vélo car-free bike path along the top of the levée up to the charming port of Marseilles-les-Aubigny. Farther north, you cross back into the Nièvre at the historic and charming town of La Charité, which offers a range of stops for refreshments. From there, it is back to Nevers through a series of villages, with some modest climbing on the return leg.

This route takes you out of Nevers to the south, before heading over towards the river Allier on relatively quiet, gently undulating roads. At Le Veurdre, it doubles back and passes close to the famous motor racing circuit of Magny Cours, once home to the French Formula One. After a long stretch through pastures and woodland, it brings you back to Nevers in parallel to the canal.
