80K AROUND THE CAFÉ
For those looking to stretch the legs a little more, here are a few suggestions to whet the appetite.
This loop goes into the neighbouring département of the Cher, along relatively flat, fast roads with low traffic. The backdrop is mainly pasture and woodland, dotted with historic villages such as Grossouvre and the picturesque Apremont-sur-Allier.
This route strikes out south along the Allier, a major tributary of the Loire, crossing at Le Veurdre and heading to the small town of Saint-Pierre-Le-Moûtier. There are no major climbs along the way as you cross farmland and woods back towards the canal that runs parallel to the Loire.
For those who like ups and downs, this circuit is pure pleasure, with more than 1,000 metres of climbing along the way, though nothing very steep. Once out of Nevers, you follow a fast-flowing stream to Montigny-aux-Amognes, after which things get a bit more hilly. After Nyon, you come to Martangy, which gives its name to a classic local climb of about 4km at about 5% gradient through sublime forest. After a few more villages you come to the little town of Saint-Saulge, a place for refreshments during opening hours. (Beware of Mondays!) After that, it’s just bucolic delight all the way back to Nevers, with a couple of late climbs before Sauvigny-les-Bois to test tired legs.
