The Dukes’ Palace in Nevers is said to be the first château on the Loire, so it is fitting that the cycling route following France’s longest river to the ocean starts here. The itinerary is well signposted, and often takes car-free tarmac paths alongside the adjacent canal or along the top of levees. From Orléans onwards, the château count goes up, as you pass through gems like Blois and Amboise. In the final 100km, the river becomes tidal and can be crossed by ferry.
